Formats for Digital Archiving and Distribution

Objective To learn some of the most important formats for digital archiving and distribution of documents of all kinds. To learn some of the properties of each of these formats. To gain some experience with accessing each format and with moving back and forth between formats.

Exercise 1 Create a PDF file from a Word Document you have created. Create a PDF file from an Excel file you have created. List some of the advantages of PDF over the “native” formats of Word and Excel. List the disadvantages.

Exercise 2 Create a PDF file from a PowerPoint file you have created. Compare the file size of the .ppt with that of the .pdf file. How much smaller or larger is the PDF?
