Census Migration Data Exercise

Objective To become thoroughly familiar with the several standard census questions that give information on internal migration and with the issues involved in choosing among them and coding them and tabulating them.

Exercise 1 You are designing a census questionnaire and want a question on place of previous residence. The choices are (i) place of residence five years ago, (ii) place of residence one year ago, and (iii) place of last residence. Enumerate and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of each of these questions. Which (if any) was included in the last census in your country? Which (if any) would you propose for inclusion in the 2000 round census, and why? Do this exercise in the form of a PowerPoint presentation that can be shared with other participants via the network; by all means collaborate with one or more other participants if you are inclined.

Exercise 2 Given a specific decision on what migration questions to include, what tables should be produced and what would be the use of each of these tables?

Exercise 3 Carry out an analysis of migration flows along the lines indicated in the presentation and in the Migration in Myanmar notes using migration flow data for another country. Note: This exercise is optional and not appropriate for all participants
